Hot spots usually are not caused by one bad part. They come from a combination of uneven suspension tension, worn padding, sweat, a poor hood balance, or a hood that is simply adjusted wrong for the person wearing it. The good news: most of those problems can be corrected without replacing a perfectly good welding hood.
Start With the Suspension, Not the Shell
When a hood hurts in the same place every day, the shell gets blamed first. More often, the suspension is the real culprit. A welding hood only feels as good as the headgear holding it in place.
Take the hood off and inspect the suspension closely. Look for stretched webbing, cracked plastic, flattened pads, loose pivots, and adjustment points that no longer hold where you set them. A worn suspension lets the hood settle lower or shift forward as you work. That movement concentrates pressure on a small section of your head instead of spreading the load across the suspension.
Set the crown straps so the hood rides level, not perched on the front of your forehead. If the hood sits too low in front, your brow takes the weight. If it sits too far back, the rear band digs in and the front can feel loose. The goal is a stable, balanced fit that stays put when you nod your head down to weld.
